A free YNAB alternative for people who liked the idea, not the upkeep

If you tried YNAB, you probably believed in it: a budget you actually look at, money with a purpose. And then life got busy, transactions piled up waiting to be approved and assigned, and the subscription renewed anyway.

That isn’t laziness. It’s a lot of upkeep. Here’s an honest look at what YNAB does better, where AI Budgie takes a different path, and how to bring your YNAB history over.

Where YNAB is better

  • Bank sync. YNAB imports transactions from many banks. AI Budgie doesn’t connect to banks.
  • Budgeting together. One YNAB subscription covers up to six people. AI Budgie is one person per account for now.
  • A proven method. Zero-based budgeting, done consistently, is very effective, and YNAB has years of teaching behind it. If it works for you, keep it.

Why people leave YNAB

The price keeps adding up. US$109 a year is billed in US dollars, so Canadians pay more after the exchange. For something you’re not sure you’ll keep up with, that’s a lot.

The method asks for daily attention. Every imported transaction waits for you to approve and categorize it, and every dollar needs assigning. Miss a week and you come back to a backlog, which is usually the moment people quit.

What AI Budgie bets on instead

A simpler budget and far less typing. You set a monthly limit for each category, not a job for every dollar. Adding a purchase is one sentence to the assistant, “Uber 23 last night”, and it lands in the right category, already counted.

No bank sync is the trade-off, and we’re upfront about it. What you get for it: nothing to approve, nothing to catch up on, and it’s free. Reports, savings goals and a short AI summary of your month are included.

Bring your YNAB history in 5 minutes

Your YNAB register comes over as it is: AI Budgie understands its Outflow and Inflow columns.

  1. Step 1: Export from YNAB

    • In the YNAB web app, click your plan’s name at the top left and choose Export Plan.
    • Unzip the download. You need Register.csv, which holds your transactions; Plan.csv holds the category amounts and isn’t needed.
  2. Step 2: Upload it to AI Budgie

Create a free account, open Transactions and choose Import CSV. Drop in Register.csv.

  3. Step 3: Check the columns, then import

Date, payee, Outflow and Inflow are matched for you, and “$0.00” on the unused side is ignored. YNAB categories with the same name as yours are filed straight away; the rest come in uncategorized. Glance at the preview, then import. Duplicates are skipped if you import the same file twice.

Questions about switching from YNAB

Is there a free alternative to YNAB?

Yes. AI Budgie is free: a monthly budget by category, transactions, reports, savings goals and an AI assistant that turns a sentence into a transaction. Unlike YNAB it doesn’t sync with banks, and it uses a monthly limit per category instead of zero-based budgeting.

How much does YNAB cost?

As of September 2026, YNAB costs US$109 a year or US$14.99 a month, with a 34-day free trial. It is billed in US dollars, including for Canadians.

Can I import my YNAB data into AI Budgie?

Yes. In YNAB choose Export Plan, unzip it, and import Register.csv in AI Budgie under Transactions → Import CSV. The Outflow and Inflow columns, dates, payees and categories are matched automatically.

Is zero-based budgeting better than a category budget?

Zero-based budgeting gives you the most control but takes regular attention. A monthly limit per category is quicker to set up and to keep up with. The better one is the one you’ll still be using in three months.

Does AI Budgie sync with my bank like YNAB?

No. AI Budgie has no bank sync. You add a purchase by typing it, like “Starbucks yesterday, 5 bucks”, or import a CSV file from your bank.
