Rocket Money doesn’t work in Canada. Here’s a budgeting app that does
You can download Rocket Money in Canada, but you can’t use it: its own help centre says it’s only for people in the United States with US banks. TD, RBC, BMO, CIBC, Scotiabank and every other Canadian bank won’t connect, and its bill negotiation works with US companies.
If what drew you to it was seeing where your money goes and keeping your spending in check, here’s an honest look at what Rocket Money does, what a Canadian can use instead, and where AI Budgie fits.

What Rocket Money does that AI Budgie doesn’t
- Finds and cancels subscriptions for you. Rocket Money spots recurring charges from your bank and can cancel some on your behalf. AI Budgie tracks recurring bills you add, but it can’t cancel anything.
- Negotiates bills. For US phone, internet and cable bills, Rocket Money will try to lower the price for a share of the savings.
- Bank sync, credit score and net worth. For people in the US, it pulls everything in automatically. AI Budgie doesn’t connect to banks.
What Canadians use instead
YNAB and Monarch Money both work in Canada and can connect to some Canadian banks, though connections to the big banks are often unreliable. Both are billed in US dollars: around US$100 a year.
Your bank’s own app can show spending by category for its own accounts, but not across banks or cards, and it won’t hold a monthly budget.
A spreadsheet is free and flexible, until the month you stop updating it.
Where AI Budgie fits
AI Budgie is made in Canada and works in Canadian dollars. It doesn’t connect to banks, so there’s nothing to break: you tell the assistant what you bought, like “Tim Hortons 4.50 this morning”, and it’s categorized and counted against this month’s budget.
Try everything for 30 days: a monthly budget by category, recurring bills, reports, savings goals and 5 AI messages a day. Premium is C$4.99 a month after that and adds CSV import from your bank, overspending alerts, bill reminders and weekly and monthly email summaries.
Start with your past few months
A budget is easier to set when you can see what you’ve been spending. Bring in your recent history from your bank, or from an app you used before.
Step 1: Get your file
- From your bank: most Canadian banks let you download transactions as a CSV in online banking, per account.
- From Mint: your transactions.csv, if you downloaded it before March 23, 2024.
- From YNAB or Monarch: their CSV exports are matched for you too.
Step 2: Upload it to AI Budgie
Create an account and start Premium (importing is part of it), then open Transactions and choose Import CSV. Drop the file in.

Step 3: Check the columns, then import
Dates, amounts, and money in and out are matched for you; categories with the same name as yours are filed straight away. Glance at the preview, then import. Duplicates are skipped if you import the same file twice.

Questions Canadians ask about Rocket Money
Is Rocket Money available in Canada?
No. Rocket Money’s help centre says it is only available to users located in the United States with US-based banks. You may be able to install the app, but Canadian banks such as TD, RBC, BMO, CIBC and Scotiabank won’t connect, and its bill negotiation works with US companies.
What is the Canadian version of Rocket Money?
There isn’t an official one. Canadians who want a budgeting app usually look at YNAB or Monarch Money, which work in Canada but are billed in US dollars, or AI Budgie, which is made in Canada, works in Canadian dollars and costs C$4.99 a month after a 30-day free trial.
Is there an app in Canada that cancels subscriptions for you?
Rocket Money’s cancellation service is US-only. In Canada, the dependable way is to review your card statements for recurring charges and cancel each from its own account settings or your phone’s app store subscriptions. AI Budgie keeps a list of recurring bills you add, so you can see what renews each month, but it doesn’t cancel them for you.
Can I use Rocket Money with a VPN in Canada?
A VPN doesn’t help: Rocket Money needs a US bank account to connect, and its terms say the service is intended only for users in the United States.
Does AI Budgie connect to Canadian banks?
No. AI Budgie has no bank sync. You add purchases by typing a sentence, or download a CSV from your bank and import it with Premium. Nothing about your bank login ever reaches us.
