A free Mint alternative that still does budgets
Mint closed on March 23, 2024. Intuit sent everyone to Credit Karma, which is good at credit scores but doesn’t do monthly category budgets; in Canada, it has no budgets at all. If you’re still looking for somewhere to put your spending, you’re far from alone.
This page is an honest comparison: what Mint did that we don’t, what we do instead, and how to bring your Mint history with you.

What Mint did that AI Budgie doesn’t
- Bank sync. Mint pulled every transaction in from your bank. AI Budgie doesn’t connect to banks, and we won’t pretend it does.
- Net worth and bills in one place. Mint tracked investments, loans and bill due dates. AI Budgie is about your monthly budget and spending.
- A phone app from the app store. AI Budgie is a web app: it works in your phone’s browser, but there’s nothing to download yet.
Why Mint people are still looking
Mint wasn’t replaced; it was folded into a credit-score app. Credit Karma shows your accounts and transactions, but the thing many people used Mint for, a monthly limit for groceries, dining out and the rest, isn’t there. Canadians lost budgets entirely.
The paid replacements are good, but they’re billed in US dollars and built around bank connections, which is exactly where Canadian banks tend to be flaky.
What AI Budgie does instead
No bank sync. Instead, adding a purchase takes one sentence: tell the assistant “Loblaws 86, groceries” and it’s categorized and counted against your budget. Bank sync saves typing, but it still leaves you going back to fix categories later; here you see each purchase once, as you add it, already in the right place.
Everything that exists today is free: a monthly budget by category, transactions with recurring bills and CSV import, reports, savings goals, and 10 AI messages a day. No ads, and we never sell your data. It speaks English and 中文, and amounts are in your own currency.
Bring your Mint history in 5 minutes
Years of Mint data don’t have to stay behind. If you have your Mint transactions.csv, AI Budgie reads it as it is.
Step 1: Find your Mint file
- Look for transactions.csv in your Downloads or backups: it’s the file Mint’s “Download my transactions” button made before March 23, 2024.
- Keep it as a .csv: no need to open or change it in a spreadsheet first.
Didn’t download it in time? Intuit’s Data & Privacy page can still send you your Mint data, usually within a few days, but as JSON rather than CSV, which AI Budgie can’t read yet.
Step 2: Upload it to AI Budgie
Create a free account, open Transactions and choose Import CSV. Drop in transactions.csv.

Step 3: Check the columns, then import
Date, description, amount, and debit or credit are matched for you. Mint categories with the same name as yours are filed straight away; the rest come in uncategorized, ready to sort. Glance at the preview, then import. Duplicates are skipped if you import the same file twice.

Pick up where Mint left off
Free to start, no card. Bring your Mint history, set a budget, and add today’s coffee in one sentence.
Start free and import my Mint dataNo bank sync, on purpose. Your data isn’t sold or used for ads.
Questions about leaving Mint
What replaced Mint?
Intuit moved Mint users to Credit Karma when Mint closed on March 23, 2024. Credit Karma shows your accounts and credit score, but it doesn’t have Mint’s monthly category budgets. People who want budgets have moved to apps such as Monarch Money or YNAB, which are paid and sync with banks, or AI Budgie, which is free and has you add purchases in a sentence.
What replaced Mint in Canada?
Nothing from Intuit: Mint Canada ended on March 23, 2024, and Credit Karma in Canada has no budgets. AI Budgie is made in Canada, works in Canadian dollars, and is free. Monarch Money and YNAB also work in Canada but are billed in US dollars.
Is there a free Mint alternative?
Yes. AI Budgie is free: monthly budgets by category, transactions, reports, savings goals and an AI assistant. It doesn’t sync with your bank; you add purchases by typing a sentence. Credit Karma is also free but has no category budgets.
Can I still export my Mint data?
Mint’s “Download my transactions” button ended with Mint. Intuit’s Data & Privacy page can still send you your Mint data on request, as JSON files. If you saved transactions.csv before March 2024, AI Budgie imports it directly; it can’t read the JSON files yet.
Does AI Budgie connect to my bank like Mint did?
No. AI Budgie has no bank sync. You add a purchase by typing it, like “Starbucks yesterday, 5 bucks”, or import a CSV from your bank. Nothing about your bank login ever reaches us.
